Traditional book distribution is dying

I just got word that another major book distributor has laid off a large portion of their sales team.  I truly think that traditional book distribution is dying.  It just doesn’t make sense to give 15% of all of your publishing profits to a sales force when over 80% of the books are sold online, with the marketing and sales efforts being those of the author and publisher.  Publishing professionals need to get out of the old patterns, or say “goodbye.”  Today, it is wiser to spend marketing dollars on smart, targeted efforts.
